Smart Object?

I DL the trial version of CS3. I cant quite figure out the purpose of "smart objects" I was reading that its a non destructive way to edit a picture which is fine but isnt that the purpose of duplicating the background? Does anyone know the purpose of this?

Oh, smart objects are cool! I am planning on doing a tutorial on them this Saturday. Can you wait that long? :?: :?:
