Don,

You have to do the selection of the "signature" then do Edit, Define Brush Preset, then give it a name.
John
John, I been doing that but Define Brush Preset is not available. I had searched in all my books and can't fine why is doing this. I went to image mode and changed the mode to RGB 8 bits and nada, cero no change. :thanks:

Don,

How are you doing your selection of the signature?
John
John, good morning I had to stop last night I got an unexpected visit from an old friend.

I'm using the Rectangular Marqee to make my selection after I crop to size the white paper that I scanned the signature from. :thanks: :thanks:

Don,

I don't get it. I tried scanning a white sheet of paper with my initials and transferred to my system as a 70Kb jpeg file.'

When I open it it shows as RGB and 8 bits per channel.

I dont even have to do a selection and the define brush preset is available and it loads it up as a brush.

So, . . . . I'm stuck.
John
Maybe you are already doing this... if not, try this.

Use black ink to write on white paper, scan and import into PSE Edit.
Duplicate the layer.
On the copy, click with Magic Wand on the white, add to selection if necessary and keep clicking until you have all the white selected; then hit the delete key.
Turn off visibility of BG layer and you should have a transparent layer showing only the black signature.
Now Ctrl-click the thumbnail of that layer and the marching ants should outline the signature

Now, Edit > Define brush from selection should do the trick.

also..... your selection can't be more than 2500 px by 2500 px.
that is usually the problem when the define brush is grayed out.
