I will admit to downloading this, and scrapping it. I could not figure out how to recolor the butterfly or swirlies. Any hints?

Swirly's can be recolored by doing fill color and make sure the preserve transparency is selected. Same can be done with the butterfly. You can also do a Hue?Saturation adjustment and click colorize to change the colors of them. These were done using brushes. The butterfly would look better though if you had a butterfly element or even use something else in its place if you wanted.

To colorize shapes such as the swirls or butterfly, I add either a linked color fill layer:
/layer/new fill layer/solid color (with 'group with previous layer' checked),
or a linked hue/sat adjustment layer with colorize checked.:
/layer/new adjustment layer/hue saturation/ (with 'group with previous layer' checked)

I find the first method more precise to choose the color. It's easy to fill with solid color, gradient or pattern. I also like adding a pattern fill layer in overlay mode over a solid color fill layer.
