When I did my first slideshow, I downloaded Audacity, and used it with Pictures2Exe, and Barry Beckham does some great tutorials for using it in this context.

However, I really want to use it for creating very simple backing tracks, where our pianist may have recorded a hymn with 4 verses, for use when we have no pianist present, but sometimes I want it with 3 or 5, so need to delete or append. Also, if I record our band, they seldom do introductions! If I am singing, I want to know which key I should be in! (In our evening services, where we have multiple tune options to the same song, I describe it as "I'll name that tune in ..." - how quickly I can identify which one is being used.) This does mean playing around adding bits, and sometimes between verses. I don't need to be able to mix tracks etc., just very basic stuff, but wondered if there were any "idiot's guides" out there!
