Adobe Unveils Photoshop Elements 8
September 23rd, 2009 at 8:15 AM - Product News by Jeff Gamet

Adobe introduced Photoshop Elements 8 for the Mac on Wednesday. The new version of the consumer-oriented image editing application added new photo clean up tools and brings the Mac OS X version in step with Windows releases.

Version 8 gained the same version of Adobe Bridge CS4 that's included with Photoshop CS4, the ability to undock tool panels, and a Quick Fix mode that shows nine variations of an adjustment with rollover previews. It also includes a Toothbrush tool that selects and whitens teeth in images, a Blue Sky tool for enhancing the sky in outdoor shots, and a Black and White tool that selectively removes color from images.

Photoshop Elements 8's Photo Merge features include an improved Scene Cleaner tool for removing unwanted parts of an image, Exposure for selecting the best parts from a collection of images of the same scene with different exposure levels, and Recompose for rescaling images while retaining the size of elements such as people.

The application includes a new Photo Collage feature with several collage templates. The collage feature also supports Recompose so users can more easily fit images into the templates.

Adobe also said that Photoshop Elements 8 for the Mac and Windows are now on the same development cycle. Starting with this version, the application will offer matching features on both platforms, and new versions for each will launch at the same time.

Photoshop Elements 8 is priced at US$99.99 and is available for pre-order at the Adobe Web site. Upgrades are available for $79.99 after a $20 mail-in rebate.
