Hi Cheryl,

This may seem like Greek right now, but with time and practice, you will be speaking Greek – really.

Now,

To see the Layers palette, in the editor, click on the menu bar on Windows and make sure there is a check mark beside where it says Layers.

It there is a check mark, it is showing.

Next, look on the right hand side of your editor window screen and you will see a light gray panel. In the middle of this there is a small “hot spot” that will change the shape of your cursor when you click on it. This hot spot will expand and contract the panel where the layers palette is or should be. If there is no light gray panel, look at the extreme right hand side in about the middle and the hot spot should be there. Click it to make sure the panel is open.

You should see something like this.

Clicking on the More tab in the Layers Palette will open up the other options and you should put a check mark where it says Place in Palette Bin when closed (right at the top).

This gets the Layers palette where you can get at it by clicking on the hot spot.

Cheryl, Part 2

There are lots of ways of adding punch to the eyes, the easiest is probably using the Burn Tool.

To get the Burn tool, click on the tool bar on the second icon from the bottom (it may look like a sponge). Do a left click and hold for a second and you will see an expanded option list that includes a hand with the thumb and index finger connected in a loop. Move the mouse and release when you are on the hand or Burn Tool.

For the image you posted, you will want a 20 pixel brush for the eye and a smaller one for the eyebrows, etc.

Here is what I used for your image

and here is the result after a little selective burning.

My sketch method is not that great, but as I was trying to explain earlier, I've been trying these tutorials with no results, until Kimi had me reset my preferences and all of a sudden I could actually accomplish something.
