Christell, I get the clone stamp, pick a small brush and click on the upper middle of picture. then I open a new file like you say. I make the brush larger and click all i get is the little bit that I alt+clicked on. If I make a sweeping stroke I just get repeating pattern. What part do you want a screen shot of??
I have also spent a lot of time on this and I cannot get very far...
First, should the clone brush have 'aligned' ticked? I suppose so.
I imagine that you only clone by clicking, not sweeping.
I have been unable to clone in the same part of the image, I had to open a much larger new image to clone the interesting part, then re-crop the new image...
This use of the clone tool is fascinating!

Edit:
This would be an ideal candidate for a VIDEO!

To me,the blank page is acting like a full type of mask and whatever brush I use each time is revealing whats underneath, what I'm not geting is the colourd ink look ,I have only cloned the pic once ,am I meant to clone every time I reveal a bit more with a differant brush ,so that I would have 3 or 4 layers ?
Do you have the white layer and the picture together??
suzib,I open a pic>cick clone stamo tool>choose any type brush and size you like but keep opacity down to 20%nextalt click at the top and middle of pic,thi will clone the whole pic,buy you wont see anything change.next, open a new file>blankfile>change sizeto 3600x3600.you should now have a blank white page as you start clicking on this blank page your pic will start to show through hun.
I hope this helps you.

I got it, thanks to Michel. It was the aligned thing, I didn't have it checked.
