Nine-One Effect using Elements, but I have done it in CS3. Will figure out how to upload a .PDF file with pictures in a short ... maybe. Unable to upload a .PDF to this site or the PrestoPhoto site, scroll to the bottom for link to .PDF file.

I am using Elements 6 on this, but the same hold true with 5 too.

1. open your image
2. duplicate (ctrl j)
3. do your normal processing (levels, hue/sat., etc.)
4. duplicate the layer again (ctrl j)
5. turn to black and white.
go to:
Enhance -> Convert to Black and White...

Select a Style (bottom left corner). Select either the Scenic Landscape
or Vivid Landscape (whichever will produce a lighter black and white). In
this case I went with the Vivid. And click ok.

*** EDIT: Instead of converting to black and white, this can be done on all verison of Photoshop or Elements and that is to Remove Color (Shift+Ctl+U) and then go into the blend mode and pick Overlay or Soft Light and change the Opacity to you liking.

6. Blend Mode
Pick either Overlay or Soft Light (try any of the other if you like…), change the Opacity to you liking.

Click on the bottom layer (Background) and turn it off (click on the eye).
Click back on the top layer.

7. PRESS the following keys at once. CTRL, ALT, SHIFT and E, this will combine
the bottom two layers into one. Call this layer Curves

8. Go to Enhance -> Adjust Color -> Adjust Color Curves
Move the Adjust sliders to get a gentle S like shape, Adjust as needed.

9. CTRL J to duplicate the 'Curves' layer and call this layer Shadows/Highlights

10.Enhance -> Adjust Lighting -> Shadows/Highlights.
Move sliders for your taste.

And there you have it.

Optional:

. Replace Step 8 with Michael's writeup on "Simulating curves with a gradient map"
will give you better control. Just my opinion. If you use this option, PRESS the following keys at once. CTRL, ALT, SHIFT and E, this will combine the bottom two layers into one and then go to step 9.

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=7363

. Duplicate the last layer again and repeat Steps 8 thru 10 and see what happens.
. Go to Enhance -> Unshark Mask as the last step and see what happens (even if you don't do the optional above this line).

The .PDF files can be downloaded here (assuming I don't forget to sign in every month it will stay there until I get my web page up).

Dane, thanks for your help
The setting sun is barely visible on the horizon. I believe it is causing the sky to be lighter in the fence area. I don't think the lighter area is artifact halo.

That turned out great Betty.
Thanks, Judy. Dane's technique is easy to follow & is also flexible, especially if the curves simulation gradient map is used.

I cant wait to try it.
Nice work Betty, really nice.

Ok, the second one might lend to the optional step? What do you thing? Duplicate the last layer and repeat steps 8 thru 10 again and on the last layer once you have completed it go into the Unmask Sharpen and use these setting (top to bottom) you determine the first one somewhere between 26 and 100, 1 and 1. I think you might be surprise of the out come.

Don't get me wrong, both are really, really nice, I just like to see the second one you posted go thru the optional step. But I like both pictures. Also you did some really nice processing on those.
