I wanted to try for some very detailed, full frame bird shots. I used a 100-300mm lens with the macro option engaged. The camera was on a tripod, aperture priority (first two f/8, last two f/5.6), prefocused to a general area so the auto focus could quickly acquire a setting. I just waited for bird(s) to move into the frame.

I forgot, but now I remember, that with macro DOF is measured in fractions of inches.
1- focused just below the eye; the face is pretty good but see how fast DOF falls off.
2 - focused on shoulder; just about everything else is out of focus - 2d bird is only a blob
3 - focused on shoulder; see how out of focus the eye and beak are
4 - sharpest of the lot because the bird was straight up and down, pretty much on one plane; but even at that, the wing is starting to fall out of focus.

Oh well, another good idea that didn't work

Rusty, bird number 2 is great. I like the way the one bird is so in focus while the other isn't.
