A lens hood keeps extraneous light out of your photo preventing lens flare and also improving color. It also serves to protect the lens from damage. The collapsable hoods look cool but they collapse very easily making the front element of the lens vulnerable to damage. I much prefer hard plastic hoods for this reason.
Thanks Rusty. I had forgotten about the rubber ones. I used them during the film days and loved them. Besides blocking stray light and protecting the lens, they take up almost no space in the camera bag. Will have to go through my artifacts of a by gone era and see what I can use on these new fangled cameras.
