This is a book review on Tim Grey book Color Confidence Second edition. After reading it I suggest that every photographer pro or amateur must read this book if you are serious about your picture taking. Your knowledge of color management will be a plus for you when it comes to producing hi quality pictures. This is the best book i have read this year.

Hello Don!
You did not include a link, but I found this one on Google:
http://www.amazon.com/Color-Confidence- ... 0782143164

I am curious to know how this book helped you with colour. I understand you have got everything under control, from display calibration to printer profiles. Can you tell us more about your display and calibrating hardware/software?

Hi Michael:
Well let me tell you I have evrything under control but there is always room for improvement. That is why I'am always trying diferent things. Well I was doing good with the Epson canned ICC profiles but I desided to move a step further and in to the intricates alleys of color management. So I ordered this book and the Frazer book that is consider by many the authority on the subject. After reading Color Confidence I began reading Frazer book in color management and was delighted to realized that Color Confidence game me the foundation to go in to Frazer book that is much more technical. I have a good foundation on color theory from collage but this book gave me a good refreshing course. I now will suggest this book to any person seeking to learn color management in layman terms.

I then contacted Cathy at cathysprofiles.com and she provided me with all the instructions I needed to make my own profiles including the targets after I printed the targets for each paper I use I mail them to her she then emailed me the profiles. I installed them and bingo, the diference is fantastic. So now I can produce much better quality images constantly and save dinero on paper and ink thanks to Cathys. The best part of this whole thing is the price $35.00 per profile.

My hardware is a 24" Dell monitor and my printer is an Epson 7800 24" I use Spider 2 Pro to calibrate my monitor. I was using Epson ICC profiles I adjusted my images here and there to match monitor. Not any more I now set my images the way I want them send them to print and Bingo!!!, What you see is what you get. I also invested on a set of Solux 5000k lights to analize my prints. You can buy them at http://www.solux.net If I was happy with my setup before now I'am tripping, :D

Hope this help to clarify amigo.
Shalom,
Don

My pleasure amigo.

BTW Mitchel, I would like to take this opportunity to expand on the subject so that many others will benefit from my experience.

People that have small printers that need ink replacement more often (13" or less) than the larger counter part will benefit greatly from obteining custom ICC profiles from Cathy. For they will waste less paper and ink and save a bundle in dinero. Not only that but the quality of their images will be incredible.

As a strong beliver that less is more I only use two papers to print my images, Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper 260 for color and Harman Glossy FB AL for B&W. In my humble opinion these two papers give me the better D-Max of all the papers I have tried. Time have showed me that is better to be master of few that a slave of many,LOL. In other words is better to know how a paper properly print in and out that to waiste time and money experimenting with every new thing that comes along. During my darkroom days I only printed on two papers (both B&W) Ilford Multigrade and Oriental Seagul both Fiber Base papers. I knew from experience what subject will print best in what paper. The new inkjet Ilford Gold paper is not as good as the original Multigrade but I found that the Harman not only match but exceeds my wet darkroom papers.

The best way to resolve this paper issue is by buying a sample pack of those papers that good printers use and then select from the pack of different bands and finishes the two or three papers that pleases you the must. Once that is taken care off and the system (monitor and printer) is properly calibrated the photographer will be able to concentrate on his/her photography and spend less time behind the computer and more time behind the camera.

Hope this help someone out there that may be having problems with their printing.
Shalom,
Don

Don, Thanks for the good reference. I saw this book in Borders but because it was printed in 2004 I just figured that it was outdated. I need some thing like this as I have been having trouble printing (meeting my high standards) with my Canon Pro 9000. I use the Colorvision Spyder 2 express to calibrate my monitor and also have a Dell 19" Ultra sharp monitor. I was about ready to give up. I was going to purchase the Bruce Fraser book but saw that it was kind of deep for my introduction to color management.
