Andong Mask Festival

Every year the city of Andong holds its Mask Dance Festival. I attended this year for the first time. One of the events is the Creative Mask contest where participants create inventive new masks in which the 'Cabinet Minister of Culture and Tourism' awards prizes. Hundreds of entries competed this year; this is one that caught my eye.

This Festival has nothing to do with Halloween, but it comes at the right time for October postings.

Judy, Always happy to share, glad you like the colors.

Rusty, I agree, always try to look for the picture within the picture by moving in closer.

Russ, thank you very much.

Here is another mask entry from the same festival.

Very cool ... it sounds like an interesting day for a photographer! How big are the masks?

Thank You Julie, it was a very interesting day, especially for a photo op. It was also a bright sunny autumn day, which brought out the colors all that much more. Although the masks were created for the contest and not specifically for a dance, they are about "one head size", i.e. the right size for a person to wear.

Another shot from the Andong Mask Dance Festival. This is a Chinese entertainment troop performing inside the Mask Dance theater. Lots of action and movement; very entertaining, very colorful.

Joe do some of the individuals create their own masks?

Hi Judy, I am not sure about the dance troops. I imagine they hire a design outfit to create and make their masks.
