I'm probably stating the obvious, but look for easy ways to avoid the clutter of multiple single-purpose machines. I stacked my printer on top of my scanner.
You don't have to be a super-talented woodworker to nail wood together into a 3-sided box. Then you mount a plywood tray with drawer slides from the hardware store. The scanner is tucked away, mostly hidden, under the printer. Pull it out on the sliding tray when you want to use it.
How well you want it to look depends on the type wood used and how much effort you care to make to finish the surfaces.
