CS5 (or CS6) upgrade from CS3

Since I have very little experience with upgrading, advice will be helpful & appreciated.

Currently, I have a registered CS3 photoshop installed. Amazon is selling a "Photoshop CS5 Upgrade" package which I plan to purchase.
The fine print in the description of the "Photoshop CS5 Upgrade" package reads:
To install an upgrade version of Photoshop CS5 software, you must have an eligible earlier version of Adobe software: Photoshop CS2, CS3, & CS4

It sounds as if my CS3 registration number is all that I need to install the CS5 upgrade --- Right (I hope)?

TIA
betty

Hi Betty,

If you are installing on the same system, you simply enter the serial number that comes on the new box (or however it is shipped to you). Installing CS5 without entering the code will give you a thirty day trial run (I think, not sure as this is one back from the current photoshop offering of CS6). Once you enter the CS5 code, it is a fully operating version.

The install will recognize that this is an upgrade version and also find the older copy of CS3 and that will be it. You can still use CS3 and CS5 installs.

If you are installing on a new system, it will ask for the serial number of the new version (CS5), then for the CS3 number as it can't find a valid install.

You are allowed to have CS5 installed and operational on 2 systems - home and work or home and laptop.

For some reason, I thought that CS5 was required in order to upgrade to CS6 photoshop. However, I'm delighted to find that I was mistaken.
With further investigation this am, I found that I will be able to upgrade from CS3 to CS6.
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html -- see right side for Upgrade Options (if interested)

So, if I am correct & all goes well, I will advance from CS3 to CS6 soon.

Thanks again, John, for your earlier explanation

Betty,

Adobe started off saying that you would have to have CS5 to get to CS6, then backed off. May be one of the few times they listened to the howls of complaints from their users. No way of knowing of they will continue or not for subsequent releases.

I am currently using CS5 and debating on whether or not to go on to CS6 or wait . . .
