I am getting CS3 for Christmas. Is there an advantage to having lightroom and what exactly does it do?
I find lightroom to be more of a bulk editor, fix similar things in many photos. Where as cs3/elements is more of a single editor. But go to this web site
http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/

watch some of the tips and see if its going to work for you. I personally like lightroom and do a fair bit of work in it before moving it to elements for the really detailed and more complex work.

Thanks Nolan, I will do that. Don't want to buy it if I don't need it.
I used to use Elements Organizer but now I use Lightroom for all my folders and pictures. I do all my saving of files and downloading of pictures in Light room. I also import into Lightroom.

The printing features are nice and I have had good success printing through it.
I really like the web shows. I have added several to my website. I think all the ones I have on there now were done in Lightroom.

One especially nice feature is the sorting of the pictures. I can sort the picture to view by the lens I used. Also the metadata is easily viewed.

When I download my picture from the card they download into Lightroom and also at the same time onto my external photography drive.

I am presently using Lightroom and CS3. I uninstalled Elements 5.

There's a major difference between CS3 and LR. CS3 is both a Pixel Processor and Pixel Editor while LR is just a Pixel Processor. What this means is that if your main focus (pun) is on processing RAW images then LR will provide a very efficient way of working. A combination of CS3's ACR and Bridge can do a similar task.

If on the other hand you need to get creative and start editing the pixels then LR cannot do this for you. You would need to go to CS3 or Elements for example. You can do this from within LR, so that edited versions are retained in the LR Library.

Personally I find the Organising features in LR a bit lacking so currently I'm duplicating my databases. All Raw images are imported and processed in LR and then a TIF version is exported and picked up by Elements Organiser.

Similarly I find printing from LR a bit lacking - specifically the control over print sharpening and image re-sizing - so I do this from Photoshop.

Web galleries in LR are nice if you're into that sort of thing.

Slideshows are basic and I prefer Proshow Gold

Just my 2p worth :-)

I think from everything I have read here that I will put LR on the back burner for now and just get used to CS3 when I get it. Come on Dec 25th.
I fine LR to be an excellent compliment to PSE5 I now do all my collections and organizing in LR. I fine the printing module to be better and much more flexible than PSE5. I can do things on it with much more flexibility that what I was unable to do in Element. For example I can print 4 -11x14 in one shot.

I'm starting to use Lightroom more and more. The fact that it has all the ACR tools found in CS3, plus the ability to use development presets for sepia and a bunch of other effect, plus the ability to apply changes to multiple images with just a few clicks, have pushed LR up to a primary role in processing photos. It can't do the heavy editing and artistic creations, but it sure can take care of all the simple tasks before focusing (!) on a few images for special treatment in CS3 or PSE5. After having it on the shelf for months, I'm now starting to get a return on my investment in it.

Chuck:
I have to confess that LR is my main program for both picture clasification and working the images. The more I use it the more I like it. To me is in a sence is like darkroom work. I like to keep my images as pure and as original as possible and LR is a fine tool for that. I now use PSE5 for spotting, applying actions and saving for web, everything else is done in LR.

If you have PSE5 or 6 i will respectfully suggest you get LR first. It is a powerful tool. Just my 2 centavos.
