Should I uninstall Lightroom 1 before I installing lightroom 2? I have optimized and backed up my catalog.

Nop, proceed to the instalation with LR1 in place. Then litle by litle LR2 will copy all the files from LR1 smoothly and nicely. I left my Original LR1 installed, no problem.

I still have both on my computer also. Why, I don't know.
Thank you. I got it installed :cheer2: and it has my photos already in the folders and most all of my preferences, at least the ones I have seen.

When can I uninstall Lightroom 1?

I still had folders for LR1.3, LR1.4, LR2 Beta, and LR2. I went through my HD and found that the LR1.x wasn't taking up all that much room on my HD, but in my case the Silvertone folder that LR2 Beta created in my My Pictures folder was nearly 8G in size. That is way too much for something I will never use again!

So then I did some looking on the Adobe forums and found a few posts talking about uninstalling LR1.x after LR2 is installed and running fine, and those that had uninstalled LR1.x didn't seem to have any problems afterwards. So, I started uninstalling the older versions, starting with the LR2 Beta and then LR1.4. No problems so far. I've rebooted my PC and LR2 is just fine, no problems with photos, catalog, nor any of my preferences, changes, and presets.

If you are absolutely sure you have no need for LR1.x, I see no problem with uninstalling it once you have LR2 set up and its running as you want it. One of the forum posts I read claimed that parts of LR2 ran better after uninstalling LR1, but I can't speak to that.

LR1 and LR2 can be left on if you want to and you should be able to use either one (but only running one instance of LR at any given time). Just remember that the catalogs are not compatible between the two and will have to be kept separate. This also means that any photo tweaks done in one won't show up in the other, unless you save the changes to the photo's metadata. But then, there are parts of LR2 that LR1 won't know what to do with anyway. I never fired up LR1 after installing the release version of LR2.

Word of caution: make sure you have everything backed up before uninstalling. 90% of the time you may not need it, but there's always that 1 time. :o
