how to use a brush

I know this is very basic but I am looking for a site or link or something that tells me how to use a brush. I have elements 5. I've played with some I've downloaded but when I put them on the background I see the brush pattern but it seems to all be in marching ants and I am not sure if it is working or not. Help........I'm not a total newbie but have become interested in brushes and need some help pointing me in the right direction thanks.

There are plenty of free tutorials on the net. About.com has many Photoshop Elements tutorials.
You can also do a Google search about using brushes in PSE5. A good book on using PSE5 is also helpful like
Photoshop Elements 5 AtoZ.

for any of you who are new at this I was using the wrong brush!! Found the answer at scrapgirls!

glad you worked it out.
I was just coming to post that it sounded like you were using the selection brush instead of the plain ole brush tool.
