A new option was introduced in PSE6 in the menu 'Select', it's 'refine edges'. I suppose it was borrowed from CS2 or CS3. It enables to change edges and is a really neat feature to build better selections or masks. I wonder why it is not often cited as an improvement in PSE6. The help is contextual, but I did find nothing in PSE6 help file.

Michel, I don't have PSE6, but just looking at your screen shot, I wonder if this is that much of a change from earlier versions? Select > Modify provides those options

I agree with you, it is pretty nice to put 4 options on the same screen.

The 'Modify' command is kept together with the new interface. Having everything at hand, plus help and toggling visibility without learning shortcuts gives a lot of easy control. I suppose they kept 'Modify' for compatibility reasons with previous versions?
