Adding flames to text.

Hello!

I want to add realistic flames to some text, specifically, the words --

hot
tips

(This is for a mag cover that I am creating.)

My question is this: Does anyone know how to add flames to text?

I tried adding under "special effects" and "layer styles" the "outer glow" effect of "fire," but not realistic enough for what I want.

I remember trying the tutorial in the PSE newsletter, Vol. 4, No. 5, page 8,
"How to add realistic flames to your images," but I couldn't figure out how to apply this effect to text only, not just an image, so that I can drop the text onto my mag cover.

If any of you talented folks have any idea as to how to do this, I would love to know how to create the look that I am after.

Thanks so much!

Hi Sela,

I know you were a PET Subscriber. One of the newsletters covered this in detail; look at Vol.4 No.5 starting on page 8

Good Luck ... I tried it and didn't do very well :)

I found a fire effect tutorial at computing.About.com type fire effect in the search and it should come up. There is a video that says it is for CS2 but I was able to do it in elements 5 just fine. There is also a written tut on the same page. Oh-- you might have to wait for the video tut to load. This one worked for me and I have elements 5

This is the best one I have ever found. It is written, not video, but very well done and easy to follow.

Thanks, everyone! Got some leads here...I appreciate it!

Rusty, I did try the tutorial that you referred to, as I had stated in my post. However, that dealt with adding fire to an image as opposed to a font...which will then be placed onto another layer. That's where my brain goes crazy trying to figure out how to add the fire effect to fonts. I may be able to figure it out with some of the links that I have been directed to go to. So I'm off to figure it out!

Thanks again, everyone!

Sela, I don't think it's possible to "add fire" to the font.

You have to create your text layer and then simplify that layer. This turns your text into "an image". You can no longer edit that "as text" but, like any other image layer, you can apply filters, styles, etc.

(or, maybe I don't understand what you are saying :D )

That is the one I was thinking of. I went looking for it and couldn't find it. So glad you had it!
