Opening pics in PSE6

A dumb question but I have had a blank moment or two (sign of old age)
I have had some computer problems and as a result had to reinstall some programs including PSE6.
Previously when using File Open the folders appeared in the Open dialogue box with relevant pics showing as thumbnails.
However, when use File Open now the folders appear with their name only, and when I open the folder all the pics with their description(filename) show but not the thumbnails. I have to click on the pic filename to have the thumbnail to appear.
How can I get the folders and pics to show up rather than folders/filenames?
Don't know if the above makes sense, but any help would be appreciated.
