selection help

I'm having trouble making a selection in a photo. I outline the object with the lasso,get the marching ants then when I try to make a layer of it,it says no pixels were selected. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Double check to make sure you are doing a selection on the layer that actually has the object in it. Will get this message if a blank layer is active.

I have gotten this message before too when the area I have selected is small and the resolution of the photo isn't very high.

What I finally ended up doing was to put each area I selected on its own layer. That solved the problem.
