Sue, it looks like it can be done one of 2 ways. If you have either Grants or Graffi's tools you can add a layer mask like in the instructions. Or you can add an adjustment layer (ie levels) and clip it to the layer and do the work on that. Hope this helps.
You need a layer mask add-on (Grant, Grafi, Hiddenelements...) Otherwise I don't see anything special. Don't forget to check the 'colorize' checkbox in the hue/saturation dialog.
