I suspect that lower resolution is one of the results of using your camera phone. I have found with most of the various sketch and paint techniques that I get much more dramatic results if I resize before starting.

It's slightly cropped from a 2 Mpix shot. I deliberately chose to 'simplify' to show that a low resolution is not necessarily a problem for creative purposes.
