I decided, rather than just spouting off ... "Why don't you try this" ... I should try it first.
I used Anita's sketch technique, but I omitted the steps at the end. I did not apply Poster Edges nor did I, as Anita suggested once, apply Accented Edges either
I did, however, continue to fiddle with it, following, in part, some things Anita used on the great sketch she posted of a little boy. It still looked a little flat to me so I finished up with a Brightness/Contrast adjustment leafing brightness alone and boosting the contrast. As usual, I probably went too far on contrast.
Here's what my work looked like:
I'm not totally satisfied. If it was my picture I would still futz around some more. I would certainly go back to the original sketch routine and try it with Accented Edges at the end to see what that looks like. Still, I think it's an improvement over what I started with.
