I love that. I once did that with a tree silhouette and used a yellow/black/grey gradient, it looked like the sun coming up behind the tree. People comment on it a lot and I never have the heart to say it was photoshopped and taken in broad daylight. I love yours, never would have thought of the greys.
Chas, would you share your steps to achieve this?
Carol, there is no magic to using a gradient. Just click on the gradient in the tool box. Pick the gradient you wish to use. I used the dark to transparent gradient. I tried using black to transparent but it looked unreal. I clicked on the foreground color and picked a medium fray color. Don't forget to do this on a copy of your background photo (CtrlJ). Then take your mouse and drag a line from where ever you want the gradient to start and stop and if you don't like the result just edit>delete. I hope this helps.
