Here are two copies of the same photo. The first is the original as taken. The second one is after opening the jpeg in Photoshop ACR as a raw file. The background was lit by using the fill light slider. All you have to do is open as and click your respective raw file i.e.,NEF (for Nikon).

wow what a fantastic example of what can be done. It is amazing.
Yup, pretty nifty what you can do with ACRaw.

And with a jpeg, you have all the same options with the exception of the White Balance "presets" of Auto, Daylight, Flash, etc. You can still tweak the WB, so no big deal.

RAW is still better, but jpeg with ACRaw rocks!

Great result! I have only played with ACR once. There certainly is a lot there to learn.
