Betty, so it wasn't a spider web at all? It was a tent caterpillar structure. I didn't know that.

Russ, Unfortunately, I'm well acquainted with the problem. Some folks in this area refer to them as "web worms"

There are some very strange things in our world.

Russ, if you care anything at all about the tree where that is ... get rid of it fast.
Tent caterpillars do a lot of damage, real quickly.

What has always worked well for me is to rip the webs with a sharp stick and then soak the web(s) with a spray of Sevin. Then, spray a mist well around all the branches where you saw the web(s).

You may have to do this several times over a week or so.

Russ, from what I remember, they spread from tree to tree. It was years ago, when I was not the keeper of the property. But, it was distressing to see. They make ugly damage.

I took that picture yesterday as we were driving back home from Yosemite. It was on the side of the highway. I hope Caltrans is smart enough to take care of the problem. Thanks for the suggestions, I had no idea it was that type of problem.
