Angela, whenever they started making this style of nutcracker, I suppose they could be used on real nuts. The ones I have seen in the stores around here seem to be strictly decorative and, the construction is such, anything other than a rather puny nut would probably break it.
We started buying these over 20 years ago; one or two each Christmas season. We have a box full of smaller ones that we don't even open any longer when we start the decorating push. We haven't bought a new one in several years ... enough is enough. However, every now and then we might spot one that just can't be resisted:
To put this into perspective for a UK friend that probably has no idea what this is all about ..... think of a nutcracker featuring one of your favorite stars with Man-U, Man-City or Arsenal.
